Now I remember why I fell in love with this band
Blue October have been my band favorite the first time I heard “Mr. Jones” on the radio. This show was a healthy reminder of why I started this past-time in the first place. They opened with “’Round Here”, the first song on their first album, a moment that for some of us re-defined our relationship with music. The next song “Untitled/Love Song” from their new album picked up the pace a little. Monday’s show at Cain Park was something like my 13th show. I was curious how this tour was going to “feel”, as it’s an album of covers, but it felt exactly right- Blue October have always incorporated a few well-chosen and well-played covers into their shows. Those were fun shows, but Blue October isn’t a band that’s purely about fun- they’re about creativity and music plumbing the entire emotional depths of the human experience with searing honesty. The last two tours that brought Blue October to the East Coast were part of the “Traveling Circus”, where Blue October and Augustana played with a varying number of openers, and rather than each band playing a discrete set, members of various bands wandered on and off the stage all night, playing no more than two or three songs at a time. But Monday’s show felt exactly right, and even though there seemed to be a lot of new fans, I’m sure most of them will jump at the chance to see them again. You don’t spend the time and money chasing a band all around a quadrant of the nation if you aren’t enormously impressed by what they’re capable of live. The song is normally performed with several improvisational verses, some used commonly, some probably only once or twice ever, and again, no disappointments. In the last two tours, I’ve noticed a significant change in the fan base, and it didn’t “feel right”. And fun is part of human experience, there was a lot of in Monday’s show, but it was in the context it’s supposed to be in.
